7 Reasons Goal Setting Is Important

Setting goals is crucial for various reasons that can positively impact our lives. Here are seven key reasons why goal-setting matters:

  1. To provide direction in life
  2. To make sure we are the ones choosing the direction of our life — not others, not fate, not the media, etc.
  3. To motivate
  4. To make sure we get what we want from life
  5. To save time
  6. To reduce stress
  7. To provide a sense of accomplishment

While living without direction in the short term can be enjoyable, human beings are inherently wired to seek purpose and direction in the long run. Goals provide a sense of purpose and direction in life.

It is often easy to let others determine our path. We may take a job because of family or friends’ influence and then we follow the dictates of our bosses. We might be swayed by popular culture or media suggestions and move in different directions. The simple truth is that if we fail to set our own goals, we risk easily falling into a path shaped by others. This can lead to stress and unhappiness. By following our own path and pursuing our own goals, we increase our chances of finding happiness and fulfilment.

While goals undoubtedly give our lives direction, they also provide the motivation to overcome difficult times and decisions. For instance, pursuing higher education while working full-time may be stressful and demanding in the short term. However, in the long run, it allows us to achieve our desired professional goals, making the effort worthwhile.

Goals also serve as the destination for what we desire out of life. Some individuals measure their goals in terms of money or material possessions, while others prioritize time or freedom. Without clearly outlined goals that align with our unique perspectives, it is easy to become sidetracked by life and others.

Additionally, goals can help you save time. When your “To-Do” list becomes overwhelming and your calendar is packed, you can simply refer to your goals. What items help you achieve your goal? Which tasks contribute to your goals? Scratch off the rest as unimportant.

Just as goals save time, they also reduce stress. By using our goals as a focal point for our life and decision-making, we simplify the process of making choices. Should you take that new position at work? How does it align with your goals?

Finally, goals give you a measurable sense of accomplishment. Each goal you achieve and every step you take towards your goals can give you a boost of energy and propel you to keep going. Each success becomes a stepping stone toward the next level of success.
